Jordan and I have had some interesting experiences the past few weeks.
Last week we went to the temple and had a good experience.
Normally, after we would go right home.
But we went searching for doughnuts instead.
I usually reject the notion that after a spiritual experience people should go indulge in treats or anything that could be construed to be a reward for worshipping.
Obviously doing so communicates a clearly wrong-headed message, and teaches anyone without a solid spiritual foundation to look forward to the “reward” and far past the spiritual blessings which is the actual reward.
More clearly:
Trips for burgers and shakes after the temple overshadows the awe that should prevail after the temple.
Yesterday, we went to visit a banker to figure out some things and afterward got froyo and found a little city center with a splash pad and watched the families enjoy themselves there.
Lesson from the two experience for me:
Take time to do things that are not only “the thing that needs to be done” so you can reflect, pause, and reset.
Reflecting, pausing, and resetting aren’t things I’ve done for a while. And they are things I should frequently do.
So even if I wouldn’t support the doing of the activity in some cases, I should engage myself to ensure I get separation from normal activity.
