30 day challenge: Keep the home desktop off

I’m looking for game-changers: small tweaks that will yield the greatest results. I spend a lot of time each day on my home desktop computer. Mostly it’s YouTube videos and computer games (League of Legends and StarCraft 2 take up the most time.)

Rarely do I spend time doing other things. And the other things (usually) can be done on my phone.

If there are things that cannot (Sunday School lesson prep, programming projects), I’ll have to find a work around. The home business. Chromebook should suffice for these needs.

I expect this to have a few positive and a few negative outcomes.

  • Time spent on non-comouter project should drastically increase, meaning my branches in the front yard and tiny house will get done faster
  • Time spent reading will increase
  • Time spent in silence will increase
  • Time spent socializing with people on the internet will decrease (that’s probably ok)
  • Time spent emptying the dishwasher will drastically increase

(Wife is really looking forward to the last one.) Potential negative outcomes include:

  • Time to complete relatively mundane task will increase (time spent typing, etc)
  • Time of some tasks requiring screen real estate may increase
  • Some relationships may fall by the wayside
  • Social media use may increase
  • Phone addiction may increase

The last two are real concerns; however, the way I see it, I won’t add new phone games or new social media apps, so there shouldn’t be too much added time on those things.

Will check back in in over time.

Unfortunately, this likely isn’t something totally sustainable; uploading GoPro footage to YouTube requires that computer. However, I know some secrets and uninstalling games is also a possibility, so there are ways to get the biggest benefits, even if I can’t totally get rid of that computer.
