Flying home in my business trip I noticed several things: about half the people around me have their laptops out and are using excel.
Normal people don’t just use excel on airplanes.
These people are working.
I am sad to see that. It’s 2000 on a Friday night. It’s time to put work away.
I expect most people on this flight are coming home from working near the airport, and to some extent, that also saddens me. They don’t work near their families.
They don’t get to go home at the end of the day and spend time with their dear ones after work.
It’s likely they work more than a full week. If they are working this late on Friday while traveling home, how late are they working on nights they don’t travel home?
How much of their lives are being taken up providing value for an employer?
How much of their lives could be spent with their families if they made different choices?
I don’t live in a particularly poor area, and there are jobs available, so I wonder what their motivations are.
All I know is I’m very grateful not to have Excel open right now.
